After endless days of commuting on the freeway to an antiseptic, sealed-window office, there is a great urge to backpack in the woods and build a fire.
1. when bombing, dress like a nerd, try your best to not look like the person who would be doing, what your doing...know what i mean. (no hoodie, head phones, and back-pack)
2.No matter what you do, when, or where you do it, you are going to offend someone...so just go ahead and do it anyway.
3.Travel as much as you can.
4.Corny, but true, "You only live once", so try to follow your gut.
5. When at a fast food spot, always order a water, then just fill it with soda at the drink fountain.
Entrepreneurs cannot be happy people until they have seen their visions become the new reality across all of society. They learn how to master whatever skills are necessary. I am, for example, modestly an introvert. However, I spent most of my days dealing with people. It helps hugely that my daily interactions are with wonderful, caring, creative entrepreneurs from whom I learn and with whom I connect. My decision to commit to the Ashoka vision turned in part on recognizing how important this balance would be. My escape for long backpack trips in the wilderness also helps. And so, of course, does finding colleagues who are complements–and with whom I and our values-based entrepreneurial community share so much that the fit works.
I like to describe innovation through an old – yet relevant – joke.
The story is of two men who are mountain-hiking when they stumble upon a hungry grizzly bear. Immediately, one of the hikers takes off his backpack and hiking boots and proceeds to put on his running shoes. The other hiker looks at him and asks, “What are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear!” The first hiker responds, “I know, but I only need to outrun you!”
Independent travel does that, bringing temporarily together these wandering ships that would otherwise pass in the night. Relationships were mostly brief and sometimes downright fleeting. The barriers and masks of settled existence melted away, allowing strangers to become fast friends, if only for a day. We travellers needed that, having deliberately stepped away from the social safety net of family, school, work and community.
